So you finally bit the bullet and started to go after what you want. You feel like a complete badass and you’re determined that nothing will keep you from success. But then reality sets in - people you thought you could count on begin to question you, your motivation fizzles, and your plans to move forward are met with obstacle after obstacle.

You’re feeling downright uncomfortable and you wonder if all this trouble to achieve your goal will be worth it in the end. You have two choices at this point: keep pushing forward and continue to grow, or give up and stagnate. Although they both cause you to feel uncomfortable, the end result of each one very different.

STAGNATION

If you aren’t growing, you’re stagnating. When you experience the discomfort of stagnation, it’s common to use false pleasure to mask that discomfort. This can show up as spending too much time on social media, watching too much T.V., overeating, and overdrinking to name a few.

It’s also common to reject yourself and hide from your challenges by telling yourself that you aren’t smart enough, attractive enough, or good enough. You sabotage any chance of success with negative self-talk that keeps you feeling small and unwilling to move forward in your life.

COMBAT STAGNATION

When you find yourself stagnating, there are a couple of ways to turn things around:

Identify unhelpful patterns. What’s getting in the way of you taking action toward your goals? Are you constantly scrolling through your phone? Are you wasting time watching T.V.? Are you procrastinating? Take inventory of your behavior patterns and do away with what isn’t serving you.

Create new patterns that are beneficial. Instead of wasting time on things like scrolling through your phone when you have downtime, do something that will get you closer to your goals instead. Take a class, do some research, or talk to a mentor.

GROWTH

The truth is that change causes discomfort. It means that you are stepping into unfamiliar territory. Stepping away from your status quo into the unknown and experiencing uncomfortable feelings means that you’re on the right track!

You have no idea exactly how what you want to do is going to turn out because you have no prior experience with it. Anything can happen, whether it’s positive or negative. The key to success is to embrace growth and all that comes with it.

EMBRACE GROWTH

When faced with the discomfort of growth it’s important that you be brave. Bravery is feeling scared and uncertain, but taking action anyway. It’s perfectly normal to feel that fear and uncertainty, and moving forward despite those uncomfortable feelings will help you gain new knowledge and experiences.

It’s also important to adopt a mindset of confidence. Having a confident mindset means that you believe your talents are not fixed, but can be developed through proper strategy, hard work, and input from others. As you grow and improve, your confidence will soar and you will achieve your goals!

THE DECISION IS YOURS

So what will it be? Will you push forward through discomfort, grow, and reach your goals. Or will you trade the discomfort of growth for stagnation, which doesn’t feel all that great either? The decision is yours. Whichever path you choose, be sure to keep your desired result in mind!
