5 Ways To Get Out Of A Funk, FAST!

Being in a funk happens to us all at one time or another. You know how it is: nothing seems to be going right, and you end up feeling discouraged, down, and depressed. I tend to get this way when I neglect my self-care for too long and let my priorities get out of order. But just because we’re in a funk doesn’t mean we need to stay there! Here are 5 ways to get yourself out of one, FAST.

1. Apply gratitude

Having an attitude of gratitude will shift your focus to what you DO have going for you. That’s because when you focus on what you’re grateful for, your brain continues to search for positivity. Gratitude literally breaks the negative thought cycle so you can start moving forward in a more uplifted state. So, the next time you find yourself in a funk, think about all of the things you’re grateful for. Even the seemingly tiny things count!

2. Change your scenery

Changing your scenery and getting fresh air and sunshine are great ways to disrupt the funk you’ve been in. Get yourself out of that dreary bedroom, office, or living space you’ve been in and take to the outdoors. Listen to the birds chirp, feel the breeze on your face. Plus the natural vitamin D from the sun is a natural mood booster!

3. Move, move, move!

Our bodies were made to move. When was the last time you moved your body on purpose? Moving around gets your blood circulating throughout your body, allowing nutrients to absorb better and your brain to work more efficiently. A happier body equals a happier mind, so get moving! Take a class at your local gym, get in a quick home workout, or take a walk around the block. Your body and mind will thank you and your mood is sure to improve.

4. Look within

When you’re in a funk, finding the root cause will enable you to stop the flow of negativity at its source. What’s been going on in your life lately? Have there been sources of stress that aren’t the norm? Is there a relationship that needs some attention? Get your feelings out on paper using a journal or notebook in order to fully process things. Take some time to meditate in order to center yourself and decrease your stress levels. Once you’re aware of the source of what’s causing the funk you’ve been in, you can set things right again.

5. Direct your focus outward

Focusing on someone other than ourselves is a great way to get out of a funk. Break the cycle of being absorbed in your own negativity by doing something positive for someone else. Not only will you be making a positive contribution to the world, but helping other feels great!

Life is full of highs and lows, and being in a funk is a perfectly normal occurrence. I hope that the tips I mentioned above can become go-to tools in your self-care arsenal.
