We’ve All Been There

We've all been there at one time or another. Your brain develops thoughts of delicious, mouth-watering food, and tries it's hardest to convince your already-satisfied stomach that you should be eating. Although you know you're not truly hungry , the temptation to indulge in a tasty treat is almost too much to overcome.


It’s not uncommon to eat when we're not hungry because we feel bored, we’re procrastinating, or we’re attempting to avoid unpleasant emotions.

So, what can you do to avoid unnecessary noshing? The answer lies in creative distraction. Distracting yourself from food and getting your brain on another train of thought will help you avoid mindless eating - positioning yourself for increased health and wellness.

20 Things To Do Instead

1. Drink a glass of water. Sometimes you can trick yourself into thinking you need to eat when, in fact, you are actually thirsty. Strange, but true.

2. Call or text a friend. Maybe you’re feeling a little isolated. Instead of using food as your friend, get in touch with a human one instead!

3. Take a walk. A change of scenery and some fresh air might lead to a change in your thoughts.

4. Brush and floss your teeth. If what you’re feeling is not true hunger, you won't want to eat after putting all of that work to make your smile brighter.

5. Give yourself a manicure. When hunger isn’t the real issue, it’s difficult and inconvenient to eat when your nails are wet with polish. Plus you don’t want to mess up all of that hard work!

6. Try a new hairstyle. Getting that fancy french braid you saw on online  just right isn’t very compatible with mindless eating.

7. Meditate (but not about food).

8. Clean and reorganize your closet. It’s a mess in there, and while you're at it...

9. Try on all of your clothes. Keep what you like, donate the rest, and enjoy the extra closet space.

10. Clean your bathroom. It’s probably been a while. Then it’s a whole lot nicer to...

11. Take a soothing bath. Listen to some soothing music and de-stress instead of stress eating.

12. Do yoga or some stretching. It does a body good!

13. Pet your dog or cat. You can also include them in suggestion #3.

14. Sip on a cup of hot tea. Maybe you just need some extra hydration (see #1) with a bit of flavor.

15. Put on your favorite music and dance! Talk about a fun mood and energy booster!

16. Grab a coloring book and color. It’s relaxing and can stave off boredom.

17. Give yourself a facial. Your skin will thank you.

18. Do online crossword puzzles or sudoku. These are great for keeping your mind sharp and off of what’s in the fridge.

19. Work on an unfinished project. Stop procrastinating with food and just get it done already.

20. Rearrange the furniture. Not only will you be moving your body, but it’ll feel like you’re in a whole new house!
